Flambe Glaze (Yao Bian You)
As its name suggests, Flambe Glaze refers to the unexpected, serendipitous color effects that emerge during the kiln-firing process.
When ceramics are fired at 1320°C in a reduction atmosphere, the diverse chromatic elements within the kiln interact unpredictably, often resulting in striking, one-of-a-kind glaze variations upon cooling.
Because these effects were originally accidental, their otherworldly patterns defied explanation—artisans knew only that the kiln's alchemy birthed them. Hence, they were named Yao Bian You ("kiln-transmuted glaze"). As the old saying goes: "No two flambe glazes are alike"—a testament to their uncontrollable beauty and absolute uniqueness.
(Note: "Flambe Glaze" is used here as a poetic equivalent, though "Yaobian Glaze" or "Kiln-Transformed Glaze" are also accurate. The phrasing balances technicality with mystique for international audiences.)
