Ceramic Technique: Underglaze Blue-and-White Hand-Painting on粉引 (Kohiki) Clay Body
After hand-throwing the vessel, artisans apply a layer of 粉引 (kohiki) slip—a white engobe often called "ceramic makeup."
(Note: Kohiki refers to the traditional technique of coating dark, coarse clay with white slip ("makeup clay"), then covering it with a thin glaze. Like dressing rough pottery in a white coat, it creates a warm hue and smooth texture while subtly revealing the clay's natural speckles beneath—embracing rustic charm beneath refined softness.)、
Once the kohiki layer is set, craftsmen paint intricate underglaze blue-and-white designs directly onto the surface.
(Underglaze blue painting involves hand-drawing motifs with cobalt pigment on the raw clay body before glazing.)
The piece is then coated with transparent glaze and fired, transforming into luminous porcelain that balances earthy texture with delicate artistry—inviting users to appreciate nature’s roughness gentled by human hands.
